$1.1 billion connectivity plan brings better coverage to regional Australia

Visitors to Mount Kosciuszko will experience stronger mobile coverage due to a completed base station at the Kosciuszko Tourist Park.

Visitors to Mount Kosciuszko will now experience stronger mobile coverage thanks to a newly completed base station at the Kosciuszko Tourist Park, delivered through the Albanese Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program (MBSP).

The new facility marks a significant step in enhancing regional communications. By expanding both 4G and 5G mobile coverage, it is improving access to emergency services, strengthening data connectivity, and supporting the productivity of nearby businesses. As one of Australia’s most popular inland tourist destinations, attracting millions of visitors each year, Kosciuszko stands to benefit from more reliable communications infrastructure that will meet the needs of locals and travellers alike.

The MBSP is one of the largest mobile coverage expansion projects in regional and remote Australia, with up to 1,400 new base stations set to be delivered. Together, these investments have generated more than $1 billion in combined funding. The program is a cornerstone of the Government’s $1.1 billion Better Connectivity Plan for Regional and Rural Australia, which aims to strengthen mobile services and make Australia one of the most connected continents in the world.

The new Kosciuszko base station has been co-funded by the Australian Government, the New South Wales Government and Telstra under Round 5A of the MBSP. These collaborative efforts highlight how multiple levels of government and industry can come together to deliver critical infrastructure where it is most needed.

Minister for Communications Anika Wells said the Government’s commitment to regional communications ensures no community is left behind.

“The Albanese Government is investing significantly in communications infrastructure so when it comes to connectivity, no one is left behind.

This investment is another example of how we are enabling Australians to be connected regardless of where they live.

Reliable mobile coverage is essential for safety, boosting the economy and the quality of people’s lives in rural and remote areas, so I know this investment will make a real difference to local residents, businesses, emergency services and tourists alike.”

Improved coverage will also enhance opportunities for social media use, online services, and digital participation across the region, ensuring that locals and visitors can stay connected wherever they are.

Member for Eden-Monaro Kristy McBain emphasised the importance of resilient communications for disaster-prone areas.

“We know how important access to reliable connectivity is, particularly for regional areas impacted or prone to natural disasters – which is why we continue to improve mobile coverage across Eden-Monaro.

This upgrade will make a huge difference to the mobile coverage at the Kosciuszko Tourist Park – supporting tourists and locals to run their businesses and to keep in touch with family and friends.

Kosciuszko is a major tourist destination and these mobile coverage upgrades will help boost opportunities in the region.

The Albanese Government is delivering resilient communications infrastructure to help boost coverage and narrow the connectivity divide in regional areas.

Upgrades like this are not only important to locals and visitors, but crucial for our emergency services during emergencies.”

With investment flowing into regional infrastructure, the MBSP continues to bridge the digital divide, ensuring communities such as those in Kosciuszko have the communications tools they need to thrive.
