The Albanese Government has appointed Adam Suckling as Deputy Chair of the ACMA for a five-year term after a merit-based selection process.

The Albanese Government has appointed Adam Suckling as Deputy Chair of the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) for a five-year term, following a merit-based selection process.

The ACMA regulates telecommunications, broadcasting, radiocommunications and certain online content in Australia to maximise benefits for the Australian community.

An Authority Member since July 2023, Suckling brings a wealth of experience in senior leadership, commercial, policy, regulatory and corporate affairs to his new position as Deputy Chair.

Throughout his time at the ACMA, he has contributed to enforcement actions, arrangements for efficient spectrum allocation, and engagement with industry bodies to improve customer protection outcomes through regulatory codes.

“The Australian Communications and Media Authority plays a vital role in regulating communications and media services that all Australians rely on to stay informed and connected,” says Minister for Communications, the Hon Michelle Rowland MP.

“Mr Suckling’s appointment as the ACMA Deputy Chair ensures the Authority continues its work in safe and experienced hands.”

Suckling is also a part-time Associate Member of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). He was previously the Chief Executive Officer of the Copyright Agency until 2022, and has extensive experience across the telecommunications, media and broadcasting sectors.

“I look forward to continuing to work closely with Mr Suckling and the ACMA as it executes its important functions.”

The Government thanks ACMA Member Carolyn Lidgerwood for acting as Deputy Chair since 11 December 2024, following the resignation of former Deputy Chair, Creina Chapman.

The Albanese Government recently released a new Statement of Expectations for the ACMA to reinforce the importance of its regulatory functions, particularly in relation to matters of public safety, consumer protections, and effective public relations. Suckling will play a key role in supporting the ACMA Chair in meeting these new expectations from Government.
