In a first-of-its-kind study by the Australian National University (ANU), the resilience of the nation’s telecommunications industry will be scrutinised.
ANU vice-chancellor Brian Schmidt said it was vitally important Australia’s telecommunications network is able to hold up in the face of pressure to.
According to Schmidt, uplifting the telecommunications industry will foster economic growth, national productivity and innovation while connecting Australians to each other and the rest of the globe.
Schmidt said, “The 2019-20 bushfires, the pandemic, floods and cyber incidents are just a few examples of recent events that have tested the resilience of the sector … by studying risks at the sector level, this project will equip future decision-makers with tools to design effective policy.”
ANU will map hazards to the telecommunications network in an effort to guarantee that it can withstand cyberattacks and natural disasters.
The Tech Policy Design Centre of the university will solicit feedback from industry, government, utility providers, emergency services and emergency management personnel, among others, to develop a profile of the network’s difficulties.
Some six million Australian people were affected by a data breach in the past year, as disclosed by the institution.

John Stanton, Communications Alliance CEO, said the telecommunications industry took its responsibilities to confront such concerns seriously.
Stanton claimed that Australia’s communication networks have done well in the face of natural and man-made threats that have never been seen before in recent years.
“Telco carriers have strengthened key network infrastructure and back-up capabilities and improved coordination with emergency authorities and key stakeholders such as the energy industry,” said Stanton.
