Digital workplace evolution: 3 in 5 companies risk falling behind on AI integration

As hype around Generative AI (Gen AI) continues to dominate industry conversations, a critical gap is emerging.

As hype around Generative AI (Gen AI) continues to dominate industry conversations, a critical gap is emerging.

According to Lenovo’s latest global research, Igniting Real Workplace Transformation, most organisations recognise the potential of Gen AI, yet few are taking the steps needed to realise it.

Based on a survey of 600 IT leaders worldwide, the report reveals that while more than 80% believe Gen AI will reshape how work gets done, only 39% are currently transforming their digital workplaces. Despite the optimism, progress remains slow.

Even more telling is that 89% of respondents agree Gen AI’s full value can only be unlocked by rethinking the entire digital workplace—not just by rolling out new tools. This signals a deeper issue: many organisations are struggling to move beyond surface-level upgrades toward meaningful, people-first change.

“Organisations that define a clear, personalised vision for transformation—and act decisively—will be the ones who unlock Gen AI’s full value,” said Rakshit Ghura, Vice President and General Manager, Digital Workplace Solutions at Lenovo. “Transformation is no longer a future ambition—it’s a present necessity.”

In practice, that means reframing the conversation. Communications teams, often left out of tech planning, have a vital role to play. Bridging the gap between IT and employees involves more than technical integration—it requires trust, clarity and consistent messaging.

This is where social media and internal comms channels become key. Leaders need to move fast, but they also need to bring their people with them. Without open dialogue, even the best AI tools risk going unused or misunderstood.

The report outlines common barriers to digital workplace transformation, such as complexity, unclear strategies and lack of alignment across departments. However, it also offers a roadmap for overcoming them—starting with a unified vision that connects people, processes and technology.

As Ghura puts it, “Those who lead will redefine not only day-to-day work, but also what’s possible for their people and businesses.”

For communicators, the message is clear: to unlock Gen AI’s promise, transformation must start with people—not just platforms.
