How technology is enhancing patient interaction

A new report from the National Industry Innovation Network (NIIN) Health Alliance outlines five technological transformations set to revolutionise healthcare delivery in the coming year.

The Health x Digital Transformation Report 2024-2025, led by the RMIT-Cisco Health Transformation Lab, provides a roadmap for healthcare providers to implement these advancements effectively. It emphasises the role of communications and technology in streamlining healthcare services.

Professor Vishaal Kishore, Executive Chair of the RMIT-Cisco Health Transformation Lab, highlighted the urgency of adapting to rapid technological changes: “Health has always been a creature of technological change. What has changed has been the pace of technology change, and the pressures on the health sector to keep up.”

The report identifies five key areas of technological innovation:

  • Augmented Intelligences: The deployment of AI and machine learning to enhance healthcare communications and decision-making.
  • Simulation and Simulacra: The use of digital replicas and simulation technologies, such as virtual reality, augmented reality, digital twins, and 3D printing, to create more immersive training and treatment environments.
  • Remote Patient Care: Leveraging digital platforms to provide healthcare services that meet patients where they are, reducing the need for in-person visits.
  • Health System Adaptability and Dynamism: Implementing technologies that enhance system resilience and enable healthcare networks to quickly adapt to changing demands.
  • Harnessing Biotechnology Breakthroughs: Integrating cutting-edge science and technology developments to shape the future of healthcare.

Notably, the report excludes experimental technologies like quantum computing and blockchain, focusing instead on innovations that can be deployed within the next 12-18 months.

Nithya Solomon, Director of the RMIT-Cisco Health Transformation Lab, noted the communication challenges facing healthcare providers: “With new technologies hitting the market on a daily basis, the health sector can be left uncertain on what technologies could make the most impact and how to take the next step.”

This report aims to bridge that gap, offering healthcare organisations clear guidance on how to leverage technology and communications to stay at the forefront of innovation and improve patient care.
