Among the most challenging aspects of being a communicator is to effectively communicate change, whether it be in policy or organisational structure. As communications professionals, we need to be proactive in engaging stakeholders and ensuring that we meet their need to be informed.
Nowhere is this more applicable than in times of crisis, as Emily Fardoulys of Ramsay Healthcare found out in 2020 at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
As the then National Communications Manager of the biggest hospital operator in Australia, Fardoulys spearheaded efforts to ensure that they meet the needs of their stakeholders when it comes to timely and accurate information.
“We made our decision early on that all our COVID related comms must come from the COVID response team so there was one source of truth. We really wanted to prevent any accidental misinformation that might occur.”
“We wanted to build a controlled messaging and communicate it to our stakeholders in a timely way. We wanted to protect our employees and boost morale wherever we could. We wanted to be really proactive about the way we communicate it, and always to make sure that we were transparent especially with our internal comms and speaking to our staff who are really on the frontline,” Fardoulys said.
Later on, Fardoulys also talks about how they communicated the change in CEO and organisational structure of Ramsay Healthcare, which they saw as an opportunity to reinforce values and purpose, and create a strong brand presence.
