Federal initiative connects students with essential online learning resources

The School Student Broadband Initiative, led by the National Broadband Network, is a Federal Government program providing eligible students with free home internet.

This initiative, benefiting up to 30,000 households with school-aged children, aims to enhance educational opportunities and reduce Australia’s digital divide.

About the Initiative

The SSBI offers eligible families free access to the NBN network, with the service active from the time of connection until 31 December 2025.

This allows other household members to use the internet service, ensuring connectivity for the entire family.

Families have until 31 December 2024 to apply for this program, and no households will be transitioned to a paid service without explicit consent. The government is currently exploring options for managing services beyond 2025.

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the SSBI, households must meet specific criteria, including:

  • have a child living at home who is enrolled in an Australian school (up to year 12 including Prep)
  • not have an active NBN network internet service at home (excludes mobile internet services)
  • live in a premises that can access the NBN network via a standard connection (NBN will confirm this)
  • not have had an active NBN connection during the previous 14 days.
How to Apply for Free Home Internet

Victorian families can directly contact the SSBI National Referral Centre to determine their eligibility. By calling 1800 954 610, families can have their home address checked for NBN availability.

There is no need to provide financial information, and translation services are also available. Alternatively, families can visit Anglicare Victoria’s website to leave their details and receive a callback at a convenient time.

The Department of Education has also partnered with NBN to help schools identify families who might qualify.

Home addresses of students have been shared with NBN for eligibility verification, with strict privacy measures in place.

Schools’ Role in the Initiative

Schools can help families by providing access to the required documents and forms for the SSBI. Staff can access student eligibility letters and necessary files through their internal systems.

These letters have been translated into 14 different languages, ensuring accessibility for non-English speaking families. Schools can manage the application process on behalf of families by submitting their details via the SSBI portal.

Schools are responsible for distributing the outcome letters to parents or carers. If the household is eligible, they will receive a voucher and instructions for signing up with a participating internet provider.

If the family is not eligible, a notification letter will be provided. Importantly, vouchers must be activated by 31 December 2024.

Additional Information for Families and Schools

Families who relocate before 31 December 2025 can continue to receive the free service at their new address, provided they remain eligible.

They must notify their internet provider of the move to ensure the connection is transferred.

Eligible households can choose their internet provider from a list of participating companies. Each provider will have a unique connection process, which may require personal information from the primary carer.

For further information, families and schools can consult the SSBI portal or contact the Department of Education for support throughout the application process.

This initiative is a significant step towards bridging the digital divide for Australian students, ensuring that more children have the internet access they need to thrive in their education.
