Google introduces Passkeys to eliminate dependence on passwords

In a bid to enhance user security and provide a simpler login experience, Google has launched Passkeys as an alternative to passwords. This comes as part of Google’s broader plan to phase out the use of passwords in the near future.

“Last year — alongside FIDO Alliance, Apple, and Microsoft — we announced we would begin work to support passkeys on our platform as an easier and more secure alternative to passwords. And today, ahead of World Password Day, we’ve begun rolling out support for passkeys across Google Accounts on all major platforms. They’ll be an additional option that people can use to sign in, alongside passwords, 2-Step Verification (2SV), etc.” Google said via a blog post.

Passkeys are a new authentication method that allows users to sign into their Google accounts without using a password. Instead, users will unlock their devices with fingerprint, a face scan or a screen lock pin.

For the time being, passwords will remain as a valid way for logging in to a Google account. Google has not specified a timeline for when the feature will be depreciated but is definitely working on what the FIDO Alliance refers to as the “passwordless future.”

Unlike passwords, passkeys are more resistant to phishing and are even more secure than SMS one-time codes.

The new authentication method is expected to make it more challenging for hackers to access users’ accounts, as Passkeys are unique to each user and cannot be easily replicated.

Google’s move to phase out passwords is part of a larger trend in the tech industry towards more secure and convenient authentication methods. With the increasing prevalence of cyber attacks, companies are looking for ways to improve user security while also providing a seamless login experience.

Passkeys are currently available to a select group of users, with wider availability expected in the coming months. Google is encouraging users to try out the new authentication method and provide feedback to help improve the user experience.
