By all indications, the Australia of today has become a much more multi-cultural society. This makes it necessary for all communicators — especially those working in government, to know how to engage people coming from diverse backgrounds.
When talking about multi-cultural communication, most people directly go to translation and localisation of content. However, this is not always the best case, as Jody Gleeson of the ACT Government shows in this video.
Even in 2021 (when this session was recorded), the local census showed that 83% of bilingual speakers in the ACT spoke English very well.
This means that despite there being a significant portion of the population who came from diverse backgrounds, not all of them needed or wanted to have communications translated to their mother tongues.
