RAW, a new dating app designed by women for women, has rolled out features designed to protect users against catfishing scams and abuse.
“Brainstorming such a potential product, for women by women, we only got carried away to reimagining the entire industry: dating that makes a woman feel good without pressures of first steps with suitors confident enough to show their faces safe from scam and abuse. And at some point, the fatigue made us feel along the lines of ‘it’s easier to make our own dating app than to keep putting up with the existing ones!’
To follow that vision, we designed RAW—not ‘another’ dating app, but one we consider the best,” – says Marina Anderson, co-founder of RAW.
Among the standout features of RAW is requiring all users to provide verification via phone number as its first line of defence. The founders hope that this feature will “make scammers’ and trolls’ lives difficult, if not turning them away at the gate.”
RAW’s founders also claim that is the only dating app that requires a new unedited two-way in-app photo every day to continue swiping. The arrangement makes catfishing impossible so you always know who you’re going to see on that first date. It also offers more freedom of expression—and ensures everyone is active and engaged.
In a bid to make it easier for the platform to protect its users, RAW allows users to tag each other with red, green, and beige flags.
“This feature helps to get to know the person better and keeps casual toxicity in check. That it also makes catfishers’ and scammers’ lives extra hard,” the company said.
Studies have showed that 30% of US adults have interacted encountered catfishing scams online, with the number at 52% for Gen Z. Female victims account for 79% of the $500M losses incurred from catfishing. An alarming number of women report assaults linked to online dating encounters.
“RAW is a solution designed to safeguard our fellow sisters with basically a fortress of features,” the company said.
