New framework promotes inclusivity and communication in universities

Eleven universities in Australia have joined the Welcoming Universities network, demonstrating their dedication to the promotion of equity, inclusion, and belonging in the higher education sector.

Welcoming Australia has also introduced the Welcoming Universities Standard, which is essential for the promotion of inclusivity and effective communication on campuses, as the network expands across four states.

Four recent members—University of Wollongong, Bond University, University of Technology Sydney (UTS), and Curtin University—highlight the increasing significance of building inclusive and encouraging cultures.

The network’s membership has increased to 11, demonstrating a collective commitment to ensuring that all students and staff feel included and appreciated.

The Welcoming Universities Standard serves as a comprehensive framework that guides universities in building inclusive campuses.

By setting clear benchmarks and best practices, it addresses key areas such as admissions, curriculum development, student support services, and community engagement.

These guidelines are designed to promote open communication and a sense of belonging, ensuring that everyone on campus can thrive.

“We are thrilled to launch the Welcoming Universities Standard and to welcome our newest members,” said Welcoming Australia CEO Aleem Ali.

“These universities have demonstrated a commitment to fostering a culture of inclusivity and belonging, and we are excited to collaborate with them to further enhance belonging in Australian universities.”

Effective communication is important to the success of these programs. Universities may cultivate inclusive settings by promoting open discourse and facilitating the interchange of ideas, thereby establishing a culture that celebrates diversity and ensures that all perspectives are acknowledged.

Director of the UTS Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion Jo Tilly expressed pride in UTS joining the network. “UTS are proud to join Welcoming Universities! Joining with like-minded colleagues offers a fantastic opportunity to strengthen our efforts in enhancing cultural diversity and anti-racism in our campus community,” she said.

Cultural Diversity Project Officer at UTS Dr Elaine Laforteza added, “Consulting on the Welcoming Universities Standard has already proved very helpful for shaping our thinking for our Cultural Diversity and Anti-Racism Action Plan, which is currently under development.”
