Reddit strikes new partnership with OpenAI

In the wake of its data-sharing agreement with Google, Reddit has announced a new collaboration with OpenAI.

By incorporating Reddit data into ChatGPT and other OpenAI initiatives, this collaboration will improve the AI’s capacity to offer relevant, smart responses.

As Reddit explained, “OpenAI will bring Reddit content to ChatGPT and new products, helping users discover and engage with Reddit communities. To do so, OpenAI will access Reddit’s Data API, which provides real-time, structured, and unique content from Reddit. This will enable OpenAI’s AI tools to better understand and showcase Reddit content, especially on recent topics.”

This collaboration is poised to be highly valuable. Reddit’s engaged, user-moderated communities offer direct consumer insights into various products and services, along with expert commentary on new developments.

With Reddit usage on the rise, these insights will become even more useful. With over 16 billion posts and comments, 306 million weekly active users, and 100,000 active communities, Reddit has become quite the phenomenon. Users can vote for the most relevant and useful material on the platform, and it will be highlighted.

The deal also benefits Reddit’s platform. “The partnership will also enable Reddit to bring new AI-powered features to redditors and mods. Reddit will be building on OpenAI’s platform of AI models to bring its powerful vision to life,” they explained.

This could be significant. Reddit has been enhancing tools for moderators to improve community management. ChatGPT-enabled discovery on Reddit could provide users with specific answers they seek. Additionally, OpenAI will become a Reddit ad partner, feeding more revenue into Reddit’s business.

This partnership appears advantageous for Reddit, which recently went public and seeks new revenue avenues. Subreddit conversations are crucial, given their rich insights into niche subjects, making Reddit a key target for those developing LLMs to power next-gen AI models. While advertising remains Reddit’s primary revenue stream, data sales are emerging as a solid secondary driver, steadily building up as a business element.

Notably, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman owns an 8.7% stake in Reddit, which likely facilitated the deal. Whether or not this influenced the arrangement, it adds an intriguing layer to the partnership. The developments for both ChatGPT and Reddit will be fascinating to watch as this collaboration unfolds.
