Australian government strengthens digital project management skills

The Australian Government is prioritising digital transformation to better serve the communication needs of Australians.

To ensure the success of these initiatives, the Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) has introduced a compulsory training program for Senior Responsible Officials (SROs) overseeing digital projects.

This training program, delivered through the Australian Public Service (APS) Academy, is designed to equip SROs with the necessary skills to handle the complexities of digital communication projects.

SROs, high-ranking officials within the Australian government, play a crucial role in ensuring that digital projects deliver the expected benefits for both individuals and businesses, particularly in enhancing communication and information access.

The program simulates a condensed digital project, covering all phases from developing a business case for investment to project closure.

Participants are required to collaborate effectively to manage and oversee the project, ensuring that communication strategies are robust and aligned with project goals. Last year’s pilot program received positive feedback, with 91% of participants finding the simulation approach highly beneficial for their learning.

Beyond technical skills, the program also integrates lessons from recent digital communication projects, emphasising the importance of continuous learning and connection-building among participants. This approach ensures that SROs are not only equipped with the latest digital skills but also with the ability to foster collaborative environments that support successful communication outcomes.

Branch Manager of Portfolio Assurance Jamie Whitcombe stressed the importance of leadership in digital projects, stating, “We know that having leaders with the right skills and experience is fundamental to delivering successful digital projects.”

The program focuses on maintaining a strong emphasis on critical success factors, such as utilising assurance, implementing best practices in benefits management, and adhering to the Australian Government Architecture’s established methods for digital design and delivery.

Feedback from the pilot program highlighted the value of sharing experiences and best practices among participants.

One participant remarked, “I think the content and delivery was great. It was extremely useful in improving my understanding of project governance and role of the Senior Responsible Officer, and I am now much more confident in undertaking this role.”

Another participant added, “This kind of program should be recommended to ensure all senior leaders have the necessary understanding of governing ICT projects.”

As digital transformation continues to evolve, the SRO program is essential in equipping the APS with the necessary communication and project management capabilities. The program aims to ensure the success of digital initiatives across the Australian government by providing senior leaders with the skills and experience needed to navigate the challenges of digital projects.
