“This is a really relevant topic for internal communications practitioners because while we’ve got all of these brilliant digital tools at our fingertips, how we use them and how strategic we are at using them remains a challenge.”
Communication and collaboration platforms such as Teams have existed for a while. But their widespread adoption can be credited to the mobility restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced people to work at home.
This presented a challenge for large organisations, where the adoption of any new process can be complex and tedious. This is particularly true for AGL Energy, a company that services 4.2 million customers.
As Australia’s largest electricity generator and largest private investor in renewable energy, AGL’s staff is composed of around 4000 employees.
As Head of Communications for AGL in 2020, Nicole oversaw the adoption of Teams and enterprise social media networking service Yammer to allow employees to interact, collaborate, and communicate freely while working from their homes.
In this video, Nicole talks about the challenges associated with introducing digital communications and workflows to a workforce of 4000 in the midst of a pandemic.
“It’s more important than ever that we keep our employees connected with the direction of the organisation, the values and purpose of the organisation. Obviously digital channels play a key role in doing that because people really expect to be communicated to inside a company in the same way that they’re communicated to in their personal lives,” said Nicole.
“People are not passive consumers, they want that opportunity for the communication to be two-way and for them to be able to give their opinion, whether that’s through liking it, or asking further questions,” Nicole said.
