Cybercriminals Target Australians via Discord: Bitdefender Report Reveals

In a detailed investigation, Bitdefender has exposed how hackers are actively disseminating spam, phishing schemes, and malware over Discord.

Hackers continue to use Discord even with its attempts to improve user safety, such as adding a 24-hour expiration time for uploaded files. Of the 35 million URLs examined over six months, Bitdefender identified 50,000 potentially harmful links.

Because of its widespread use as a communication platform, Discord has become an appealing target for cybercriminals. Hackers use the platform to distribute harmful links and malware and host risky content. Bitdefender’s Mobile Security, which includes Chat Protection technology, helps users intercept these threats. The technology also supports WhatsApp, Messages, and Meta’s Messenger, providing proactive protection by detecting dangerous messages before user interaction.

Detecting dangerous messages before the user interacts with them is vital to providing proactive protection. This proactive approach allows Bitdefender to map out the types of threats using Discord as an attack vector, offering a clearer understanding of the ongoing risks.

Spam and scams continue to plague Discord users. One notable scam involves tricking users with offers of free Discord Nitro subscriptions, which unlock various features. Some legitimate companies offer Nitro as prizes, adding to the confusion. Scammers create fake websites to steal credentials or financial information from unsuspecting victims. Another common scam targets users by promising free Nitro access through linking Discord and Steam accounts, which leads to attackers stealing Steam credentials.

While Discord’s efforts to curb these threats have made hosting malware more difficult, other scams persist. Cybercriminals move swiftly, coming up with fresh methods to trick consumers into thinking their accounts are in danger or that they have received bogus awards. Particularly exposed to these schemes is the gaming sector.

Australians are among the top ten countries targeted by these cyber threats. This alarming trend underscores the need for robust security measures. Users should exercise caution when using unknown links, even those from familiar sources. Employing security software that offers real-time protection against malware is essential. Keeping operating systems and applications updated helps patch potential security vulnerabilities. Additionally, regularly reviewing and adjusting Discord privacy settings can limit exposure to unsolicited messages or files.

Bitdefender’s report highlights the persistent dangers on Discord, urging users to remain vigilant and proactive in safeguarding their online security.
