Government investment transforms broadband communication in Queensland

Over 800,000 homes and businesses in Queensland can now upgrade to world-class full-fibre NBN broadband.

This upgrade has been made possible through investment from the Albanese Government.

The Government has invested $2.4 billion in NBN Co over four years to give 1.5 million more households and businesses affordable access to full fibre to the premises, including over 660,000 in regional communities.

This is on top of our commitment to ensure the NBN remains in public hands, with legislation introduced to ensure the NBN remains in public ownership.

Queensland has seen strong uptake with more than 117,000 premises across the state already upgrading to full fibre – benefitting from speeds up to 18 times faster than the average broadband connection over copper.

“Fast and reliable internet is essential infrastructure in 2024, which is why the Albanese Government has invested $2.4 billion to support NBN Co’s fibre upgrade program, and introduced vital legislation to ensure this critical national infrastructure remains in public hands,” says Minister for Communications, the Hon Michelle Rowland MP.

“It’s fantastic to see so many Queensland households and businesses already benefitting from faster speeds, with the upgrades continuing to expand across the state.”

The local government areas of Moreton Bay, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Cairns lead the way with the highest number of fibre connections.

Access to upgrades across the state is expanding with a further 41,000 premises – including 39,000 in 54 suburbs not previously announced – to be progressively eligible fibre upgrades between now and the end of 2025.

Full fibre connections allow more people to enjoy faster speeds while streaming, gaming and working from home and continues the Government’s commitment to keep communities connected.

“With demand for data ever increasing, access to world-class full fibre technology is a gamechanger for Australians who’ve previously struggled with copper connections.”

The upgrades come as Queenslanders are using more data than ever–with data consumption growing by more than 37 per cent over the past three years. The average Queensland household now downloads around 482GB of data each month, equivalent to streaming more than 50 hours of 4K Netflix.

The fibre upgrades are available on demand when an eligible household or small business takes out an eligible higher speed tier plan.

“I encourage households across Queensland to check the NBN Co website to see if you’re eligible for a full fibre upgrade to enjoy the benefits of faster broadband,” she concluded.
