Serryn O’Regan on maintaining public trust through effective crisis response strategies

Comms Room is happy to share our interview with Chief Executive Officer of Equinim College Serryn O’Regan, as she imparts her invaluable insights on effective crisis response.

What role does foresight play in your crisis management strategy? Can you describe a situation where early risk detection helped prevent a social media crisis?

Super important. Be fully aware of the environment we are all operating in these days.

No blind ignorance! Stay on top of customer trends, seek and respond to feedback, always put customer interests first.

Likewise, have a team that is all over legal and regulatory changes and risks that then works commercially with the business. We are connected to industry and we are ahead of the game.

Before a critical change is introduced, we are usually all over it and responding to it in advance. Don’t be afraid to lead! Just do what you know is needed.

How do you balance being proactive with the inevitable reactive elements of crisis management?

Know the risks. They are a reality.

Don’t be surprised at risks playing out, but do absolutely everything possible to eliminate them prior. Be steady and have the whole team with you.

What communication channels have proven most effective in managing crises at Equinim College? How do you ensure these channels remain open and efficient during a crisis?

Full communication. Equal ownership across all of the team. We are all responsible. Keep clients/customers up to date. Don’t ever let them feel they are in the dark. Customer care drives all comms.

Can you give an example of how analytics have helped you detect and respond to an emerging issue? How do you select and implement tools to fit the unique needs of your institution?

We keep on top of risks that are occurring. We teach Cyber Security and are leaders in this field, so this helps. We are also closely connected to industries we work with, so we know what is needed and what is coming, as well as what the pain points are.

We also stay right on the legislative and regulatory framework and are fully aware of what is in the pipeline, before it occurs.

How do you ensure transparency without compromising sensitive information during a crisis?

Everything is run by legal. We work together as a team to ensure customers are looked after without ever breaching any legal/regulatory requirements or putting our very sensitive info at any risk.

Serryn ‘s interview emphasises that by staying ahead of industry trends, monitoring risks, and responding to regulatory changes, organisations can prevent crises from escalating.

A proactive approach, combined with a unified team effort, enables effective crisis management, ensuring public trust is sustained even in challenging times.

Serryn is a speaker for the upcoming 19th Annual Social Media for Gov.
