Netflix buys Australian studio responsible for Happy Feet, Lego Movie

Netflix announced its acquisition of the Australian animation studio behind films Happy Feet and The Lego Movie in support of its ambitious animated film slate, building on films like Over the MoonKlaus, and The Sea Beast.

Animal Logic, a Sydney-based company, has been creating visually stunning design, animation, and effects for over 30 years.

In 2015, Animal Logic opened a second studio in Canada and had since contributed to Hollywood blockbusters like Peter Rabbit 1 & 2 and Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole.

The studio’s remarkable portfolio also highlights a catalogue of unique visual effects work such as The Matrix, 300, and The Great Gatsby.

Netflix said in its news release that the announcement strengthens the two firms’ existing ties with a full slate of movies, including Wendy Rogers’ The Magician’s Elephant and the Ron Howard-directed The Shrinking of the Treehorns for Netflix.

Under CEO and co-founder Zareh Nalbandian, Animal Logic will carry out continuing and existing production commitments and cooperate and work with long-standing studio partners.

Nalbandian said the acquisition is the ideal next phase for Animal Logic and that the two companies’ values and aspirations could not be more aligned.

“Our collective experience and talent will open new doors for all our teams and will empower a new level of creativity in animation,” she said.

Netflix Vice President of Studio Operations Amy Reinhard said the streaming service has been investing in animation over the past few years.

She adds that the partnership furthers the streaming giant’s commitment to building a world-class animation studio.

Reinhard said, “Animal Logic is a leading animation studio with innovative technology that will strengthen our existing business and increase our long-term capacity in the animation space, so that we can better entertain our members around the world.”

Holding to its autonomy, Animal Logic Entertainment will work with renowned directors and significant studio partners to create and produce sophisticated family entertainment with broad appeal.

According to the release, the Animal Logic and Netflix Animation teams will establish a global creative production team and an animation studio that will produce some of the most prominent animated film titles on the platform.
