Aussies urged to ‘Connect. Reflect. Protect.’ on Safer Internet Day 2023

Communications Minister Michelle Rowland is urging Australians to ‘Connect, Reflect and Protect’ on Safer Internet Day 2023.

Rowland said, “This year’s theme for Safer Internet Day is ‘Connect. Reflect. Protect. ’It gives Australians an opportunity to connect to the tools and resources at esafety.gov.au, reflect on how we can stay safe online, and take action to protect ourselves, family and friends.

“The eSafety Commissioner is here to help, and I encourage all Australians to make themselves familiar with the resources they have to offer.”

First celebrated in 2003, Safer Internet Day provides an opportunity for families, communities, and educational institutions to learn more about remaining safe online.

The eSafety Commissioner, the world’s top authority on online safety, organises Safer Internet Day in Australia. It is commemorated on a global scale.

The theme for this year’s Safer Internet Day is “Connect. Reflect. Protect” which urges internet users to be mindful of:

  • connecting to eSafety’s tools and resources,
  • reflecting on how our online behaviour may impact others, and
  • protecting ourselves and others.

Australians who encounter online safety difficulties, such as child cyberbullying, serious online abuse, and image-based abuse, can turn to the country’s eSafety Commissioner for support.

The Albanese Government also claims it is committed to upholding online safety.

The Alannah & Madeline Foundation-developed digital and media literacy tools were made freely available to all schools—not just those that could afford them—as part of the government’s $6 million pledge in the 2022–23 Budget.

“All Australians deserve to connect to safe and inclusive online environments. While the internet provides many benefits to our daily lives, it can also expose us to risks and harms such as harassment and exposure to harmful content,” said Rowland.
