The Classification Board makes important decisions and provides advice about the content of films, computer games and certain publications to help Australians make informed choices about what they and their families watch, read and play.
Steven Thomson has previously held several roles with the former Australia Council for the Arts, including as Director of Strategy and Planning. Most recently he was the acting Executive Director of People and Corporate Services with the NSW Government Greater Cities Commission.
“I would like to welcome Mr Thomson as Director of the Classification Board, and wish him every success in this important role,” says Minister for Communications, the Hon Michelle Rowland MP.
The appointment of Thomson allows Tristan Sharp to resume his role as Deputy Director, having served in the role of Acting Director of the Board since January 2024, and Dominique Irlinger returns to his role as a full-time member having recently served as Acting Deputy Director.

“I also acknowledge the contributions of Mr Sharp and Mr Irlinger who have served ably in their recent acting roles. I also wish Mr Richards, who served the board diligently for the past seven years, the best in his future endeavours.”
Hellen Perko has served as a full-time member of the Classification Board since March 2023. She has a strong understanding of the National Classification Scheme and brings a culturally diverse perspective and connection to non-English speaking communities.
The Board thanks and farewells outgoing Member Raphael Richards, who served on the Board for almost seven years.
“The Classification Board plays an essential role in providing trusted and reliable content information to Australians – and it must reflect the broader Australian community to do this effectively.”
“The Board will continue supporting Australian consumers to make informed decisions on content appropriate for themselves and their loved ones.”
