Tas Police successfully tests encrypted radio technology

Tasmania Police successfully tested a new encrypted radio technology following an early access trial of the Tasmanian Government Radio Network (TasGRN) at the T20 Cricket World Cup event in Hobart.

The TasGRN was built and delivered under a contract with Motorola Solutions.

The Tasmanian Government, Motorola Solutions and Telstra are working together on the TasGRN project to connect the state’s emergency services, land management and electricity providers to a single, unified, digital, secure and interoperable radio network.

According to Adrian Bodnar, acting deputy commissioner of Tasmania Police, the early access trial provided them the opportunity to evaluate the TasGRN hardware and infrastructure in a fully operational response.

Bodnar said, “Tasmania Police is committed to delivering the highest quality of service to the Tasmanian community, and we look forward to transitioning on to the TasGRN late next year.”

“The TasGRN will strengthen our ability to keep Tasmanians safe because the world-class digitally encrypted radio communications network will significantly improve our voice communication and security.

“It will also simplify and strengthen our ability to communicate with other emergency services and emergency management stakeholders.

“Being able to conduct this early access trial in collaboration with Telstra and Motorola Solutions demonstrates how advanced the infrastructure and technology supporting the TasGRN project is, and the success shows how robust this network already is.”

A recent five-year strategic partnership between Telstra and Microsoft will aid in fostering Australia’s digital development.

This historic agreement marks one of Microsoft’s most extensive global collaborations with a telecommunications operator.

By integrating Microsoft technology with Telstra’s network reach and technological capabilities, both businesses will collaborate to speed up Australia’s digital transformation.

Further, Microsoft will be an anchor tenant for Telstra’s brand-new, ultra-rapid intercity fiber network, promoting connectivity and business expansion for Australian clients.

With Microsoft Azure as a preferred cloud partner as part of Telstra’s multi-cloud strategy, the alliance will also help Telstra achieve its goal of having around 90% of its applications running on public cloud infrastructure by 2025.

Additionally, there will be a strong emphasis on promoting better hybrid work solutions, and Telstra will open an end-to-end Microsoft practice to support clients going through digital transformation processes.

The completion of a $567 million contract that the Tasmanian Government signed with Telstra in December 2020 will now proceed after this successful test.
