ACCC’s Measuring Broadband Report reveals enhanced speeds

Some NBN Co Fixed Wireless Plus plan customers have seen a notable boost in broadband speeds over the past six months, according to the ACCC’s latest Measuring Broadband Australia report.

Following recent speed changes by NBN Co, the average download speed for uplifted Fixed Wireless Plus services reached 96.7 Mbps across all hours in May 2024. This is a significant increase compared to the 58.6 Mbps recorded for all fixed wireless services in December 2023. During peak hours of 7 to 11 pm on weeknights, speeds rose from 49.8 Mbps to 78.2 Mbps.

ACCC Commissioner Anna Brakey highlighted the positive trend: “Download speed performance has never been higher on NBN’s fixed-line and fixed wireless networks.”

“This improved performance is encouraging to see following NBN Co’s investments in its network and its recently simplified wholesale pricing.”

The report also shows that average download performance across all fixed wireless services reached 100.1% of the maximum plan speed across all hours and 84.1% during busy hours. In May 2024, fixed-line connections averaged 100.4% of plan speed during busy hours, marking the first time this figure has exceeded 100% in the report’s history.

This is possible because NBN Co overprovisions some products by 10-15%.

Underperforming services, which seldom achieve at least 75% of their plan speed, made up 4% of NBN fixed-line services tested, the lowest in the program’s history.

“We will continue to monitor underperforming services as they can have a big impact on consumers who rightly expect to receive the speeds they are paying for,” said Brakey.

She encouraged consumers experiencing slow speeds to contact their service provider for potential upgrades.

In November 2023, NBN Co announced plans to boost Fixed Wireless Plus speeds without increasing the wholesale price. The ACCC is also exploring the possibility of monitoring satellite services like NBN Sky Muster and Starlink as part of its program.
