Google has announced the release of its broad core algorithm updates to improve ranking processes, altering how sites appear on search results pages.
“We’re releasing a core update, as we do several times per year,” Google announced.
The tech giant did not precisely explain the updates but gave a generic overview of what was happening.
“Several times per year, we make substantial improvements to our overall ranking processes, which we refer to as core updates.”
“Core updates are changes we make to improve Search overall and keep pace with the changing nature of the web. While nothing in a core update is specific to any particular site, these updates may produce some noticeable changes to how sites perform,” Google added.
According to Google, pages that dip in ranks are not necessarily doing something wrong or being penalized but are appraised against other web content produced since the last update.
“There’s nothing wrong with pages that may perform less well in a core update. They haven’t violated our webmaster guidelines nor been subjected to a manual or algorithmic action, as can happen to pages that do violate those guidelines.”
“In fact, there’s nothing in a core update that targets specific pages or sites. Instead, the changes are about improving how our systems assess content overall. These changes may cause some pages that were previously under-rewarded to do better.”
Google explained that while nothing in a core update is unique to any site, the updates can still cause some noticeable changes in how sites run.
Google points to the same guidance it published in 2019 for those seeking to perform well with Google Search, including core updates.
The guidance recommends that the easiest method to deal with the impact of a core algorithm update is to focus on creating the most meaningful possible content.
It further notes that broad core algorithm updates happen every few months, and some sites may not be able to get back up from one update until the next one is released.
The most recent Google core update was in November 2021.
