From 30 October to 1 November 2024, at the Pullman Albert Park Melbourne, the 6th Annual Social Media for Gov NZ Summit gathered leaders to explore how to drive innovation, build trust, and expand reach in today’s digital landscape.
With social media overflowing with content, the summit focused on helping public sector organisations stand out, even on tight budgets. Attendees learned how to refine content strategies, stay ahead of platform changes, and combat misinformation, all while building stronger relationships with their audiences.
Manager of Data and Insights at Aroturuki Tamariki Anna Jackson praised the summit’s practical impact. “A valuable 2 days where I learned a lot, was inspired and challenged and made some great connections.,” she said.
Attendees walked away with real-world strategies to optimise their digital presence, engage audiences, and enhance transparency.
Building Trust in a Misinformation Era
One of the key themes of the event was tackling misinformation. National Data Governance Manager at Hato Hone St John Alan Sheppard reflected on how the presentations sharpened his approach. “Presentations were pertinent and positive. Content allowed me to further shape my thinking on AI and applicable governance,” he noted.
The summit highlighted the need for public sector agencies to collaborate to enhance public services and improve citizen trust.
Eleanor Aitken, Principal Data Sharing Advisor at MBIE, remarked, “This conference fosters data synergies across agencies to enhance public services effectively.”
Her testimonial echoed the importance of using data-driven strategies to build credibility in the public sector.
Information Systems Officer at Hurunui District Council Brendon Sandrey found the discussions around legislative challenges particularly insightful. “The summit is an excellent opportunity to connect with other data-oriented folks and understand the challenges they face in generating meaningful deliverables that keep their organisations in line with cultural and legislative obligations,” he said.
Innovation Drives Engagement
Delegates also explored ways to develop engaging, low-budget campaigns that cut through the noise of oversaturated social media platforms. Senior Policy Advisor at Te Pūtahitanga o Te Waipounamu Nathan McCluskey reflected on the event’s energy, saying, “The 6th Annual NZ Government Data Summit was a beautiful collision of data exploration and fascinating group happiness.”
Manager of Data Analytics at FNDC Thomas van Dalen appreciated the opportunity to exchange ideas and challenge conventional thinking. “This is a great event that brings data people together to exchange ideas and challenge the norm,” he said.
