Twitter restricts sharing links to social media competitors

Twitter has announced that it will suspend accounts that have been created for the sole purpose of sharing links and/or or advertising usernames to its social media competitors.

Twitter support said in a tweet on Sunday that the change will affect content from social media platforms including Facebook and Instagram from Meta, and platforms such as Mastodon, Truth Social, Tribel, Nostr and Post while enabling cross-content publishing.

“Why?” Jack Dorsey, the former CEO of Twitter, replied to the Twitter support post with one word.

He recently put money into the social media platform Nostr.

“Doesn’t make sense,” Dorsey said in response to another user who had asked about the promotion prohibition on Nostr.

TikTok, which is owned by ByteDance Ltd of China, is not on the list because it is a short video platform.

Twitter’s Trust and Safety Council, a group of volunteers established in 2016 to offer input on policy choices for the social media network, was abolished last week.

Since Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, purchased Twitter, the company has been in disarray, including the recent policy change.

While he waffled on how much to charge for Twitter’s subscription service, Twitter Blue, he sacked top management and laid off over half of its workers.

In addition, some journalists had their accounts suspended by Musk because of the issue surrounding the reports about the publicly available information regarding the billionaire’s plane.

On Friday, government leaders, advocacy groups, and journalistic organisations from around the world voiced their concerns that the microblogging site was threatening press freedom. Musk responded by restoring the accounts.
