Regulators from Australia met with their counterparts from Canada, Ireland, Hong Kong and the United States to find better ways to combat scam communications.
The “Combating Scam Communications” meeting, hosted by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), provided an opportunity for attendees to exchange strategic perspectives on current activities and difficulties with cross-border enforcement.
CRTC Chair Ian Scott said, “Unlawful spam and unwanted calls continue to be major threats to consumers around the globe. Coordinating our efforts internationally is the only way we can tackle this issue. By doing so, we are increasing our chances of protecting our citizens from those engaging in illegal and damaging activities.”
The delegates also looked into ways to boost international cooperation and thwart scam communications.

The five nations’ representatives concurred that they should keep working together and exchanging strategic data. In jurisdictions where scam communications may originate or be a problem, they will look for involvement from other regulatory agencies.
Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) Authority Member James Cameron said, “Joint efforts at scam disruption by regulators internationally is a key line of defense. Every scam blocked is a win for consumers, hardens telecommunications networks and disrupts the scammers’ business model.”
This gathering expands on the regulatory cooperation that already exists through the Unsolicited Communications Enforcement Network (UCENet) and the solid bilateral ties between numerous international regulatory organizations.
UCENet intends to advance worldwide collaboration in spam enforcement and address issues associated to spam, including phishing, online fraud, and the spread of viruses.
Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel said, “Is there a person on this planet who does not hate getting robocalls? Scammers are an all-too-familiar threat to consumers around the globe and partnerships like this are critical in our unified efforts to protect consumers and fight back against scammers.”
